Terms of Service

Last updated 20 July 2026

What Akari Play is

Akari Play lets independent artists sell individual listens of their music. A listener pays for a single play. Artists keep their rights; we only host, press, and deliver.

Every copy is watermarked

This is the core of the service, so we say it plainly: when you buy a listen, we render a copy that is unique to you and carries an inaudible identifier tied to your purchase. If that copy is later found distributed elsewhere, the artist can trace it back to the purchase it came from. Buying a listen is not permission to copy, share, rip, or redistribute the recording.

Payment and fees

Payments are processed by Stripe; we never see or store your full card details. Akari Play takes 10% plus 50¢ of each listen sold. Artists set their own prices; listeners may pay above the asking price, with a $1 minimum per listen.

Artist plans

Paid plans bill monthly through Stripe and renew until cancelled. Cancel any time from the billing portal in your studio — cancellation takes effect at the end of the period you have already paid for. Plans meter how many tracks you can keep live and how many copies you can press per month; they never restrict the watermark or the price you may charge.

What artists promise us

That you own or control the rights to everything you upload. You keep ownership; you grant Akari Play only the licence needed to host, watermark, and deliver your music to the people who buy it. We remove infringing material on credible notice and close accounts that repeatedly infringe.

Refunds

An unplayed listen is refundable in full. Once the play has started, the listen has been delivered and is final. Broken playback, a double charge, or a charge you did not make is always put right. The whole policy, including how to ask and how long it takes, is on the Refunds page.

Who may use Akari Play

You must be at least 18 to sell music here, and at least 13 to buy a listen. One person, one artist account, unless we agree otherwise in writing. Everything you tell us at signup or checkout has to be true.

What you may not do

No uploading music you do not have the rights to. No ripping, re-recording, or redistributing a copy you bought. No attempting to defeat, strip, or alter the watermark or the playback keys. No probing or overloading the service, and no using it to launder money or to test stolen cards. We may suspend or close an account that does any of this, and we will cooperate with law enforcement where the law requires it.

Copyright and takedowns

Artists warrant that they own or control what they upload. If you believe something here infringes your copyright, our notice-and-takedown procedure — and what a valid notice must contain — is on the Copyright & Takedowns page. We terminate repeat infringers.

Chargebacks

If something is wrong, email us first — we would far rather refund you than fight you. Disputes filed without contacting us cost the artist their earnings on that sale, and we may suspend an account used to file fraudulent disputes.

Availability

We work to keep the service running but do not guarantee uninterrupted access. The service is provided as is, and our liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the previous twelve months.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms; the date at the top always says when. If a change materially affects what you have already bought or sold, we will say so by email. Continuing to use the service after a change means you accept it.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, and any dispute belongs to the state or federal courts located in California.
